“True to my Baltic heritage, love of nature is what inspires me and guides me in my work.” -Dace Birkhans Dace currently produces artistic works in her studio in Toronto. Dace’s work is represented in collections at the National Gallery, Ottawa Toronto Reference Library University of Toronto, Massey College University of Guelph as well as many private collections in Canada, Europe, the USA and Australia. Some of Dace’s exhibitions include: Windsor Art Gallery, in Toronto–theLatvian Canadian Cultural Centre, the Heliconian Club, the Hazelton 5 Gallery, the Pollock Gallery, the Olivia Gallery and then the Four Continent Latvian Artists Exhibition, Riga in 1987. Dace has been an active member of LATVIS participating in their annual exhibitions since the 1970’s, receiving awards and commendations. She has done much freelance work over the years including a photo mural for Toronto’s Jane Mallet Theatre, as well as wall paintings and murals for various stores and private residences. Dace has worked as a scenic artist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and as a display and graphic artist for the Toronto Public Library and Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library. Her works in oil and watercolour, whether deeply-observed still life or evocative landscape, display a painterly and free style of execution with strong line and loose vigorous brushwork.Reality of life brings need for employment. She honours the classic etching technique but adds her own innovative spirit. Her etchings, symbolic, mystical and psychologically penetrating, show the inner workings of a highly imaginative and often whimsical sensibility. Each medium presents unique and exciting challenges. Originally from Montreal, presently resides in Ontario.ĭace is noted for her work as a printmaker, as well as her painting in oil and watercolour. Numerous Radio, Television and Public-speaking appearances. Author of the books Happy New Millennium (Key-Porter 1999) and Here’s The Plan (Allenworks 2008) with a first novel in progress. Global travels have led to a Photographic series on Adventures in Global Travels and Made by Nature Collages. Her photographs reflect the passion for these interests. Within minutes the sky was wildly wrapped in rapidly changing colours, transitioning pure white into soft pinks, pale green, onto bold striking neon greens and pinks all in matter of minutes.
